Before the 2016 Australian Open, Shuai Zhang aged 27, with 8 years as a LTA professional, had a career total earnings of less than $ 1 million. She then won her way into the Australian Open Quarter Finals and had later successes at Wimbledon.

In round 1 of the 2016 Australian Open, she defeated Simona Halep, who was ranked No. 2.

She surprised herself and others by making the quarterfinals of the 2016 Australian Open. This inspired her to continue her tennis career instead of retiring. This was her first quarterfinal.

Her career earnings now top $ 11 million. That is a massive turnaround from less than $1 million in 2016. So since considering retirement, she lifted her game to give her earnings of $ 1.1 million a year since 2016.
